Turn off HVAC power before opening a thermostat, photograph every connected wire, and record the terminal labels. Do not identify compatibility by wire color alone.
Confirm whether the system is conventional, heat pump, multi-stage, high-voltage, or includes accessories such as humidification or ventilation. Use each manufacturer's official checker with this information.
Resolve power and control requirements
A C wire can provide continuous power, but requirements vary by thermostat and HVAC system. Some products support adapters or power-sharing approaches; that does not mean every system can skip a C wire.
Check which app is mandatory for setup, whether control continues without internet, and which voice or Matter platforms are supported after onboarding.
Plan the installation
Renters need permission. Owners with unfamiliar wiring, line-voltage systems, or complex accessories should budget for a qualified HVAC professional.
Only after compatibility is resolved should you compare room sensors, schedules, displays, and energy features.
